Novemeber is Mouth Cancer Action Month! Have you been screened?
As healthcare professionals, at Buckle Advanced Dental Care in Wirral we are focused on ensuring overall health for your teeth, gums and mouth. We also perform an oral cancer screening during your routine dental visits to look for the early signs of this growing health concern. It could be life saving!
There is limited awareness about mouth cancer among the public, which means that many people would not know if they had it, or be able to spot the warning signs themselves. You might even be surprised to know that there are almost 6,500 new cases of mouth cancer diagnosed each year, and as with any type of cancer it is important to spot the signs early in order to treat it quickly. Oral cancer is often highly treatable when caught early, but survival statistics change dramatically if it is not diagnosed until the late stage.
Oral cancer screening is a quick and easy procedure that we carry it out for all of our patients in order to protect and care for them to our best ability. We will ask you questions about your lifestyle habits (do you smoke or use tobacco?), mouth health and whether you have experienced any problems or changes. The screening itself is pain free and not at all uncomfortable. We will very carefully feel under your jaw, the outside of your neck, the floor of your mouth and the insides of your lips and cheeks. We will also ask you to stick out your tongue so that we can check it, and have a good look at the roof of your mouth and the back of your throat. It might sound or seem strange but touch is as important as looking for oral cancer screening as it helps us to detect any subtle changes.
If your dentist is concerned about your oral cancer screening, we have special procedures to refer you quickly and efficiently to a specialist for further diagnosis. We will always talk to you, explaining out concerns and listening to yours.
With such little awareness of mouth cancer among the public, we feel that it is important to not only that we check for it but also to educate our patients and make them aware of the common signs to look out for. The Mouth Cancer Foundation has put together this excellent film that describes how to check for mouth cancer yourself, it only takes two minutes to watch and could save a life!
