Gum Disease Treatment Diagram WirralPeriodontal or gum disease is an infection affecting the tissues surrounding the teeth. Treating gum disease promptly and effectively is important. Leaving gum disease untreated often leads to additional complex dental concerns, including tooth loss. Dr. Ian Buckle and his team of dentists in Liverpool provide a full range of gum disease treatments. A periodontal screening is part of your routine dental care, enabling our staff to spot developing disease as early as possible for more conservative treatment. They also offer correction of receding gums with gum grafts and cosmetic gum lifts.

Stages of Gum Disease

There are two key stages of gum disease, each of which can have a progression of symptoms.

Gingivitis is early gum disease that is typically characterized by red, swollen or irritated gums that may bleed when brushing. Gingivitis can usually be treated conservatively with success to avoid further infection and damage.

Gum Disease Symptoms

Typically, patients do not realize they have gum disease until the later stages, when damage to the gums affects the teeth or gums become significantly irritated. Common signs of gum disease include:

  • Red, swollen or sore gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Receding gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Mouth sores or pus between gums and teeth
  • Bad breath (halitosis)
  • Changes in the fit of dentures

Gum Disease Treatment

Treatment of gingivitis is usually completed by scaling your teeth, oral hygiene advice and tooth brushing instructions. Regular appointments to our Liverpool dentist office ensures effective plaque removal and healthy gums will follow this appointment. These appointments are typically between 2-6 months apart and are usually one hour in length.

Treating periodontitis is a bit more complex. Treatment begins with a full mouth root planning and removal of plaque. In some cases, antibiotics may be used to treat any infections. Gums will be reassessed after a series of treatments and further treatment may be recommended. This may include antibiotic gels that are inserted into deep gum pockets, periodontal surgery, tooth extractions and dental implants.

Gum Grafts and Gum Lifts

We perform gum grafts for patients who have progressed gum recession as a result of gum disease. In addition, we provide cosmetic gum lifts for patients who have a “gummy smile” with excessive gum tissue covering the tooth.
